Across the yard

When I cross the yard I’m often unimpressed. The small lawn creeps where it shouldn’t, so do the weeds. What I do have is birds coming around. We draw them in with feeders and 2+ bird baths. And we get variety. They are fun to watch. Recently I set up a log dangling in mid-air where they can land and eat from the feeder. Best for larger birds but smaller ones like it too. Below is the hummingbird feeder. They come around too.

on my walk today I looked down to see a large spiky bur opened wide with a seed next to it. I know the story and I can hear it too. Somewhere on the hill is a chestnut tree and it drops these burs. The squirrels come and take the seeds and burys them. On my walk I heard them fall and hit the bushes near the ground.

We have a large chestnut tree in front. It looms over the road and puts out seed which I ‘ve grabbed up many times. Below are two chestnut trees growing.

A couple of weeks ago I rescued the hydrangea in a red pot by the door. It wasn’t doing well and so I transplanted it on the side of the house. The place that gets dappled sunlight. It likes the soil, sun, and water in this area. It’s doing great. No longer does it sag and wilt. The leaf color is a healthy green. It doesn’t take a green thumb to troubleshoot plant issues.

When we first moved into this house I was amazed at how the birds love this bird bath. I haven’t moved it and keep it filled with water like today. On the stem is a squirrel. You don’t notice this squirrel and often it is obscured and blends into the base. Today was different. I noticed it’s brown with a black stripe down its back. I never noticed the details on this little guy and I’ve lived here 11 years.
