In northern oregon is the living ghost town of dufur, prounced “do for.” When they say living ghost town it means people still live there. Dufur has a buzz of life though downtown has many vacant buildings. Some of the buildings in town are 100 plus years old as is the Balch Hotel built in 1907 and still operates as a Bed & Breakfast.
Near downtown is the living history museum with many authentic structures such as the Lewis anderson log cabin with duck-tailing construction with some of the logs still having bark on them. There are several barns packed with farming machinery and old transportation used a century ago.
I noticed a water pump. The kind used to put water in a pail. It looked like a period piece and as I observed I noticed something peculiar. The manufacturer stamped the pump “Made in China.” Back then an item of such western design manufactured in china? It was either imported from china or outsourced to china. There was no one to ask, so I assume china was actively trading with the united states a hundred years ago.
