Backpacking with Michele on San Jacinto Mountain

To find San Jacinto Mountain, go to Palm Springs and look up. It’s the mountain the tram goes up to. But on the other side is the quaint town of Idyllwild and the trailhead to the top of the mountain. We probably should have taken the tram.

The start of our little backpacking trip required an ascent of two thousand feet. Michele did great, up until about the last 50 feet. Then collapse. I went ahead and found we were at the top already. She was a trooper and gave it her all. The next few days were spent on leisurely walks and camping in the crevices of the rocks. It’s where I first got a good glimpse of skunk cabbage.

The mountain is well watered and lush with alpine forest. I hate to admit it, but I liked not having to worry about bears. No bears.

The coldest night I’ve spent was atop Mt. San Jacinto, decades ago, in my 20s. (We ran out of light; there was snow, wind, COLD; bivouac on some rocks near the summit with beloved boyfriend from years ago; shivering!!!!!) It always makes me appreciate my warm comfortable bed :))) Dawn

Dawn, I know your post is several months old. Thank you for reading and sharing. Despite being in the middle of the desert, this mountain receives winter snow. When we went, we had it all to ourselves. This was our one and only backpacking adventure. Still married 36 years now.

Awesome! Vivid memories, even all these years later! Wonderful that we can re-live the adventures of our youth :)))
