Written while attending foster parent classes

There are first and there are lasts
We joyfully announce our last class

As usual the set-up is different
We have been very patient
Tonight there are several speakers
We’re all humble and gracious creatures

This has been quite an experience
But this will be our last appearance
Patrick found his birth mother
His search for self now has closure

He’s writing a book he hopes to publish
It’s going to take a lot to finish
These children have unusual needs
They are a very special breed

We want to do our best for them
We don’t want to create any problems
But will we ever adopt a child?
Or will our names be lost in a file

Maybe there really aren’t any children
Where are they? And why can’t we see them
Seven months of classroom instruction
This has been a long education

And I have been a very good student
For all I’ve been through they should make me president!
